A Kingston Police constable who was assaulted by her supervisor shared her worries about being labeled as the officer who “ratted him out.” Now, Kingston Police Chief Adam Mac Intosh is discussing what it means for employees to feel secure when they speak up.

Mac Intosh stated he was “absolutely disappointed” upon learning that a senior member of his team attended a sentencing hearing for a former police sergeant who confessed to assaulting a female constable under his supervision.
Kingston Police Staff Sergeant Cameron Gough showed up at Ontario Court of Justice in Napanee for the hearing last Aug. 13 seemingly supporting Jason Alblas, the ex-Kingston Police sergeant who pleaded guilty in June to assault after initially being charged with sexual assault back in February 2025.
The fact that Gough has served as both president of Kingston Police Association and Uniform Director of Police Association of Ontario (PAO) raises bigger questions regarding workplace support and what is expected from senior police officers.
During an extensive interview with Kingstonist focusing on workplace culture and whether Kingston Police staff can safely voice concerns about their superiors within their ranks , Mac Intosh mentioned that senior officers should be held under greater scrutiny regarding their behavior , emphasizing that everyone needs to feel “psychologically safe” when bringing up issues about supervisors.

A constable assaulted by her supervisor In court last week , the complainant talked about how Alblas’s actions have had lasting impacts on her life , especially within her work environment. “As a police officer , I’m supposed to protect victims; it has been difficult accepting that , in this case , I am a victim,” she said in a victim impact statement read aloud by Crown counsel. Her statement also highlighted her anxieties regarding how she is perceived among colleagues. She expressed concerns that others see her as either “the girl who ratted out her supervisor” or “the girl that was sexually assaulted by her sergeant.” Gough listened intently as these words were spoken in court. Afterward , Gough was seen having lunch with Alblas and his defense attorney , Joseph Markson , at a pub located in Napanee. Gough brings over two decades of experience with Kingston Police and currently heads up Community Oriented Response and Enforcement (CORE) Unit overseeing Community Response and Traffic units. He’s been involved with police association leadership for thirteen years including five years serving as president of Kingston Police Association. However he acknowledged there’s still more progress needed: “I recognize we have come quite some way but fixing everything won’t happen overnight.”
A problem identified years ago
Concerns regarding morale levels along with support coming from upper management existed even before Mac Intosh took charge. Macintosh reiterated importance building environments where employees trust voicing concerns could do so openly without fear attached. Improved internal communications while encouraging greater employee input were points noted alongside emphasizing respectful transparency while dealing matters promptly wherever applicable. His message towards staff remained firm. “To all members within KPS regardless position held -we’re here backing you!” Macintosh emphasized adding reassurance every member understood they weren’t alone. He reiterated disappointment surrounding Gough attending sentencing reflecting seriousness conveyed stating commitment towards ensuring supporting those affected including this particular victimized officer facing crime-related difficulties.
