The Ontario government has announced that it will increase the speed limit to 110 kilometres per hour on an extra 938 kilometres of provincial highways, including parts of Highways 401 and 416 in eastern Ontario starting June 26.
This Friday, sections of Highway set to have higher speeds include Highway 401 east of Kingston from Highway 15 to Highway 16 and Highway 416 from Cedar Grove Road to Highway 401.
On August 31st, the speed limit on Highway 401 through Kingston from County Road 38 to Highway 15 will also be raised. This includes areas like Highway 401 from Sidney Street to CNR Overhead Bridge in Belleville and from Colborne to Cobourg.
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria states this change aims to help drivers reach their destinations faster while ensuring safety is maintained.
The province mentions that nearly 89 percent of its highway network will have a speed limit of 110 km/h once these changes are fully rolled out, up from just about43 percent currently.
Officials clarify that the increased limits will only apply to highways that have gone through technical assessments and are designed for higher speeds safely.
