A thick, smoky haze that smells like campfires continues to linger over Hamilton for a second day on Thursday as wildfire smoke from northwestern Ontario impacts air quality across southern Ontario.
Hamilton, Burlington, Brantford, and St. Catharines are all experiencing a 10+ rating on the Air Quality Health Index – the highest level possible – categorized as “very high risk.”
According to Air Quality Ontario, vulnerable groups like children, seniors, and individuals with “heart or breathing problems” should steer clear of “outdoor physical exertion.” The agency also recommends that everyone else limit intense outdoor activities.
“Reduce or reschedule strenuous activities outdoors, especially if you experience symptoms such as coughing and throat irritation,” the agency advised online Thursday morning.
The hazy air resulting from over 100 wildfires in northwestern Ontario has caused several communities, many of which are Anishinaabe, to either evacuate or prepare for potential evacuation.
As of Thursday, there are 176 active fires in Ontario, with 134 located in the northwest region according to the provincial Natural Resources Ministry. Out of these fires, 62 are currently out of control.
The provincial government has made an official request for help from the federal government “to be ready to fast-track resources for evacuations.”
“This includes possible Canadian Armed Forces deployments,” stated Jill Dunlop, Ontario’s minister of emergency preparedness and response.
The city plans to evaluate conditions regarding Friday’s garbage collection based on air quality status.
