Today marks the municipal election, and residents throughout Waterloo region and Guelph will be heading out to vote for their mayors, councillors, and school board trustees.
Jennifer Shaw serves as the clerk in Cambridge, where both online and in-person voting are available. She emphasizes that today is a significant occasion for everyone in the city and across the area.
“Voting is an important democratic right to exercise and sometimes when we don’t vote, we’re remaining silent and we’re not participating in that process,” she said.
“I encourage everyone to do their research to see who those candidates are and who they think will best represent them here at city hall and best make decisions on their behalf.”

What you need to know to vote in Monday’s municipal election
Municipal election day is scheduled for Monday, October 26. Do you have everything necessary to cast your ballot? CBC K-W’s Aastha Shetty spoke with Kitchener’s clerk for some helpful tips.
In Kitchener, clerk Amanda Fusco shared that the municipal election matters greatly because local decisions affect daily life.
“Whether that’s new streets, new playgrounds, new parks, new sidewalks, these are the services that directly impact the day-to-day life,” she said.
Voting Tips
For those voting online, Shaw mentions that individuals must complete registration and confirm “they are who they say they are.”
If voting in person, individuals should bring one or two forms of ID showing their name and address.
Shaw also noted that anyone waiting in line at 8 p. m. can still cast their vote.
Fusco mentioned that Kitchener utilizes tabulators for counting ballots.
“Those vote count tabulators are secure and they are tested. They are not connected to the internet or any sort of equipment,” she said. “We ensure that they’re never left unattended.”
WATCH | If a candidate has dropped out, their name may still be on the ballot:
Why some withdrawn candidate names will still be on the ballot
Some candidates running for municipal office or school board trustee have chosen not to participate in this upcoming election; however, their names will remain on ballots. Amanda Fusco explains this situation since these withdrawals were announced after the August 21 deadline. She clarifies what happens if these candidates win.Even if certain individuals have withdrawn from candidacy, they will still appear on ballots due to dropping out after the August 21 deadline.</P
Regarding results , Shaw mentions they can’t predict exactly when they’ll start coming in but assures voters that once polls close , they’ll be available on the city’s website.
