Rail News: Passenger Rail

The Canadian government and the province of Ontario have recently announced a significant step forward in the Hamilton light-rail line project with a major contract award.

This line will stretch roughly 8.7 miles from Eastgate to Mc Master, featuring 17 stops that will connect around 50,000 riders to jobs and housing every day.

The Ontario government has granted a contract for the initial major package of civil and utility work to the Hamilton Transit Alliance. This alliance, led by Aecon Group Inc., will focus on design and construction planning over the next two years.

Tasks will involve creating construction schedules and carrying out preparatory work along the route, including utility relocations, bridges, sidewalks, and traffic-control systems.

To support this project financially, the Canadian government is contributing up to CA$1.7 billion, marking it as the largest federal public transit investment in Hamilton, according to an Ontario press release. The province is overseeing the project’s construction through Metrolinx.

“This project will transform how people travel across downtown Hamilton, creating connections to the Hamilton Street Railway and GO Transit,” said Metrolinx President and CEO Michael Lindsay in a press release.

A firm completion timeline for this project isn’t expected until sometime in 2027 or 2028.
