Trump’s mail-in voting restrictions blocked by a second judge

A second federal judge has stopped Donald Trump’s administration from putting into effect a new US Postal Service rule that would make mail-in voting more difficult.
However, the US Supreme Court is still considering the administration’s request to overturn a different order that blocks the rule. Late on Sunday, District Judge Carl J Nichols in Washington, DC, issued a similar hold on the rule that was originally set on August 21.
“Plaintiffs have demonstrated that, absent an injunction, there is an increased risk that a significant number of otherwise appropriate absentee or mail-in ballots will ultimately not be counted in the upcoming elections,” Nichols wrote in issuing the preliminary injunction.
“The public has a strong interest in ensuring that doesn’t happen.”
Nichols had previously refused to issue an injunction in May because he found that the lawsuit seeking one was filed too early. That was also part of the high court’s reasoning when it lifted an earlier freeze by Talwani last month.
But since the administration recently put its plan into motion with Trump’s directive, plaintiffs in Boston and Washington, DC refiled their lawsuits. Talwani was nominated by former president Barack Obama while Nichols was appointed by Trump.
The new Postal Service regulations come from an executive order Trump signed earlier this year. Election officials argue it would be impossible to carry out these changes so close to a general election.

A coroner in Pennsylvania reported the death of a 40-year-old woman linked to the state’s ongoing measles outbreak. This marks what seems to be the third death during this outbreak; two previous fatalities involved infants-one born with a genetic defect that made her susceptible to infections and another who died from complications due to measles infection causing spleen rupture.
A Republican congressman shared his experience swimming to safety after his plane made an emergency landing in a lake late Saturday night. Representative Tom Tiffany stated he was returning from La Crosse county Lincoln Day Dinner when their light aircraft lost power while approaching Wausau downtown airport. The pilot had no choice but to land in Lake Wausau where both ended up swimming ashore safely.
Barack Obama encouraged Democrats last week at a closed-door fundraiser in Manhattan to focus on starting “a public conversation” about managing AI safely.
