To make things easier for transfer students, the University of Guelph is set to fully adopt the Ontario Transfer Credit System (ONTCS), with support from the Ontario Council on Articulation and Transfer (ONCAT).
This initiative will create a centralized system designed to speed up, clarify, and standardize the transfer process. It aims to replace scattered tools with a unified, transparent, and student-focused approach. Students will benefit from a smoother transition regarding their transfer credits, receiving timely information that helps them make smart choices about program options, course planning, and tuition fees.
“We are proud to be leading the ONTCS implementation at the University of Guelph as part of our commitment to supporting transfer students and expanding student mobility across the sector,” says Lisa Latif, University Registrar.
“We look forward to working closely with faculty, academic staff and campus partners to implement a system that helps create a more seamless, accessible and inclusive transfer experience.”

U of G takes lead in adopting new platform
The number of transfer students at the University of Guelph keeps growing; around 600 transfer students enroll each year. U of G is an early adopter of this new system modeled after one currently used in British Columbia. Fully operational by April 2027, including inter-provincial capabilities, this change will enhance Ontario’s transfer system through shared tools and consistent practices that will minimize delays. This will allow for better comparison between courses and curricula for evaluating transfers while establishing equivalencies and recording decisions. The goal is to give transfer students a way to monitor their credit transfers more effectively, potentially speeding up processing times by up to 25%. The first phase will focus on domestic students, with future plans for international ones as well. It also plans to develop resources for institutions including a digital toolkit, webinar series, training materials and workflow maps created in collaboration with six partner universities to help them get ready for adopting the system. “ONCAT is pleased to support this joint project led by the University of Guelph in partnership with six other publicly assisted postsecondary institutions to implement the Ontario Transfer Credit System and establish a replicable approach to implementation,” says Dr. Adrienne Galway, president and CEO, ONCAT. “ONTCS is one of several shared tools provided by ONCAT to colleges, universities and Indigenous Institutes across the province to support learner mobility. Through this collaborative approach, ONTCS strengthens transparency, streamlines credit recognition and helps students move more efficiently between credentials and institutions.” The project is among 27 funded by $1.94 million from ONCAT which collaborates with postsecondary institutions to build academic pathways, facilitate recognition of prior learning and assist learners’ transitions into job markets. ONCAT receives funding from the Government of Ontario. For more details about transferring credits or processes involved visit our Admissions webpage.Source link
