Ontario’s food supply is facing challenges from tariffs, climate change, cyberattacks, and diseases, keeping farmers and agribusinesses alert. As they deal with these modern issues, the University of Guelph is assisting them in remaining flexible and strong despite disruptions.
U of G’s partnership with the Government of Ontario and Agricultural Research and Innovation Ontario (ARIO) through the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance shows that a focus on research, lab expertise, and workforce training can help reduce risks, making Ontario’s food system more resilient, safe, and sustainable.
“The University of Guelph’s collaboration with the Government of Ontario and ARIO fosters innovation in agriculture and food-areas that are crucial to Ontario’s economy,” says Dr. Rene Van Acker, president and vice-chancellor at U of G. “Through leading research, talent development, and sharing knowledge, we provide growers, producers, and industry with solutions that enhance productivity locally while boosting competitiveness globally.”
The people, places, and programs within the Alliance maximize benefits for Ontario’s agri-food sector by tripling the province’s investment.
“Our partnership with U of G and ARIO through the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance is safeguarding Ontario by securing our food supply,” says Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness Trevor Jones. “By investing in research and innovation, we equip farmers and agribusinesses with modern tools to remain competitive, explore new markets, and provide local communities with high-quality food.”
Together with the University of Guelph along with the Government of Ontario and ARIO are working to protect Ontario’s food system by addressing diseases such as avian influenza while defending farms against infrastructure attacks and preparing future leaders.
