Three individuals arrested during a vehicle theft probe in Guelph may be linked to other similar crimes throughout southern Ontario.
Authorities mentioned that the inquiry started on New Year’s Eve outside a nearby gym.
According to investigators, a man from Brampton obtained a gym membership at the facility located on Eramosa Road, using an alias.
He allegedly took a wallet and keys for a 2017 Toyota Camry from a changeroom and, with assistance from another accomplice, found the car parked outside and drove off with it.
“The Guelph Police Service Break Enter Auto Theft Unit took over the investigation and identified a suspect. Officers attended his address in Brampton last Friday (January 9) and located the stolen Camry with a fake licence plate attached,” said police.
“While conducting surveillance, officers saw three men, including their suspect, driving in a Toyota van which had been stolen from Toronto earlier that morning.”
All three suspects, hailing from Brampton, were taken into custody and charged. Their ages range from 27 to 32 years old.
The investigation is ongoing with police services from other regions now involved.
