U. S. President Donald Trump has accused Canada of letting wildfire smoke drift into the United States and mentioned that he wants to factor the costs of air pollution into current tariffs on Canadian products. This was reported by Reuters, according to UNN.

Details

On Friday, Trump stated he believes Canada is to blame for poor forest management, which has led to heavy smoke from numerous fires covering parts of U. S. states stretching from the Midwest to the Northeast.

We hold Canada responsible for improperly managing their forests.. The United States is suffering an unjustified invasion of dirty, polluted, and unhealthy air

– he wrote on Truth Social.

The U. S. president also indicated that “the costs of this pollution must be added to the tariffs Canada is currently paying” and said he would talk about this with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Canada responds to accusations

Canada’s Minister of Emergency Preparedness and Community Resilience, Eleanor Olszewski, noted that since 2020, the government has put in 12 billion Canadian dollars towards boosting forest resilience and preventing fires. She highlighted the long-standing partnership between Canada and the U. S. in tackling wildfires across both borders.

Climatologists explain that large-scale fires in Canada are becoming more common due to hotter and drier weather conditions linked to climate change.

According to Reuters, this year most fires are occurring in northwestern Ontario, where around 650,000 acres have already burned, forcing thousands of people to evacuate. Meanwhile, in the U. S., land affected by fires in 2026 also exceeds average levels over the past decade.
