The premiers from Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, and Saskatchewan are asking the federal government for more involvement in selecting judges for their superior and appeal courts.

In a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney, they argue that having their governments included in this process will ensure judicial appointments “appropriately reflect the diversity and the unique needs of each province and territory.”

The premiers want the federal government to select judges from a list of candidates recommended by the provinces when appointing judges to superior trial courts and courts of appeal.

Justice Minister Sean Fraser stated that this is not something his government is currently considering.

He mentioned that the federal government consults with provinces and territories during this process to gather their input, and he believes it’s working well.

The letter follows an earlier request from Alberta Premier Danielle Smith this year for more influence over judicial appointments. She even suggested withholding some court funding if her demands aren’t met.
