Two small earthquakes shook southern Ontario overnight, with people in one city hearing loud booms and feeling their homes tremble, which led to conversations on social media.

Natural Resources Canada reported that Burlington experienced the two quakes, the first one occurring late Tuesday night and then early Wednesday morning, Oct. 13 and 14.

The initial quake, with a magnitude of 1.4, hit at 10:42 p. m. Tuesday, about seven kilometres east of Burlington near Boxley Road and Stratton Road.

A second quake, slightly stronger at magnitude 1.5, was recorded at 1:13 a. m. Wednesday, also around seven kilometres east of the city near Lake Ontario.

According to Earthquakes Canada, both earthquakes took place at a depth of five kilometres.

The tremors led locals to share their experiences online, describing sudden loud bangs that resembled explosions or sonic booms. Many felt their homes shake.

The discussion quickly spread on local social media platforms like the Burlington Together Facebook group, where residents compared notes on what they heard and felt during the night.

Earthquakes Canada identified both events as earthquakes and noted them as felt by the community. The agency’s initial report for the first tremor included feedback from 10 people regarding its intensity.

Even though residents reported startling noises, there were no reports of damage linked to either earthquake.

Will Mississauga ever get a subway?

Burlington and its surroundings have experienced minor earthquakes before. In January 2026, another small seismic event was recorded after residents noted a sudden shake late at night.

While earthquakes in southern Ontario are generally less intense than those in other parts of Canada’s more seismically active regions, small shallow quakes can still be felt by people living close to their epicentres.

Earthquakes Canada encourages individuals who feel shaking to fill out its “Did you feel it?” questionnaire. These reports assist the agency in understanding how an earthquake affected nearby communities.

You can find records for these latest earthquakes in the Burlington area through Earthquakes Canada’s Southern Ontario earthquake reports.
