The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) and Halton police are looking into the deaths of two men after a “disturbance” at a home in Burlington late Tuesday night.

Halton police received a call around 12:30 a. m. regarding a residence on Cornerstone Drive in Alton Village, close to Appleby Line and Dundas Street.

“911 calls were placed but there wasn’t anyone on the other line. I think there were some voices that were heard on the other line. The call I think was put through as unknown trouble and then police responded. So I’m not sure that they kind of knew exactly what they were getting into when they arrived,” said Kristy Denette, SIU spokesperson.

The SIU reported that a 28-year-old man ran upstairs when officers got there. There was a brief interaction as police tried to make an arrest, during which they used a taser. The man was later found with a self-inflicted stab wound. Paramedics arrived but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say it’s still unclear if the man was tasered by police, but the watchdog is involved because he died following his interaction with officers.

The SIU also confirmed that another man thought to be in his 50s was found dead inside the home. A woman of similar age was taken to the hospital with non-serious injuries and has since been released. Halton police are investigating that man’s death.

Halton police haven’t confirmed the identities of the victims, but several neighbors told CHCH News that the two deceased are Mauro Gennaccaro and his son Luciano Gennaccaro.

“I heard some arguing and commotion around 12:30, but that was a regular occurrence so we didn’t really think anything of it,” said a neighbor.

Neighbors told CHCH News that for years they’ve heard loud arguments coming from inside the home so often that sometimes those living nearby would record them.

Behind closed doors, neighbors mentioned Mauro Gennaccaro had been having issues with his son Luciano.

“A few years ago the son moved in, and from what I gathered speaking with the husband it was the son that was constantly physically attacking him, and he was defending himself constantly,” said a neighbor.

The SIU couldn’t confirm if this incident involved murder-suicide, but they did mention an “edged weapon” had been found inside the home.

Halton police have directed all inquiries to the SIU and state there is “no known risk to public safety.”

The SIU is asking anyone who might have information about this investigation-especially video or photos-to reach out to their lead investigator at 800-787-8529 or through their website.

Officers from both agencies will be canvassing residents today to see if anyone witnessed anything relevant.

While authorities carry on with their investigation, roads in the area have been reopened.
