BARRIE – A 27-year-old woman was taken to the hospital after her SUV crashed through a fence and fell into a construction site excavation behind Bayfield Mall in Barrie on Wednesday evening.
Emergency crews were alerted to the scene at 53 Coulter Street around 7:20 p. m. The area is being developed for a 12-storey, 188-unit apartment building.
When firefighters, police, and paramedics arrived, they found the SUV at the bottom of the excavation pit after it broke through a perimeter fence and dropped an estimated 16 feet into the site.
Barrie Fire crews worked to carefully get the driver out of the vehicle before helping paramedics lift her out of the excavation using a ladder. She was taken to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre with non-life-threatening injuries and was later reported to be in stable condition.
Investigators mentioned that the construction site seemed properly secured, with a surrounding metal fence and warning markers present at the time of the incident.
About two hours following the crash, crews successfully removed the damaged SUV from the pit. Authorities have not yet figured out what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway and enter onto the construction site. The investigation is still ongoing.
No other injuries were reported.
