Environment Canada is warning that freezing rain is expected for Hamilton, Burlington, and Brantford on Thursday evening.

This weather event should start in the early evening and ease off by midnight, with ice accumulation possibly reaching up to 2 mm. The federal weather agency advises everyone to be careful due to potentially icy and slippery surfaces that may be hard to notice.

“Freezing drizzle” might linger into Friday morning, they added.

A yellow warning has been issued for Hamilton, Burlington, and Brantford, indicating that the hazardous weather could lead to moderate short-term damage or disruptions. Higher levels of warnings include orange and red for more severe impacts.

The Hamilton Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) has declared a “storm watch,” as mentioned on social media. They had already scheduled a professional activity (PA) day for Friday, meaning students won’t be in school.

HWDSB will keep the community updated about any closures.

The northern section of the Niagara Region, including Grimsby and St. Catharines, is under a special weather statement suggesting freezing rain is possible but not as likely.
