The lawsuit, which claims negligence and seeks over $4 million in damages, is separate from the Milton, Ont., criminal trial for Brandy Cooney and Becky Hamber, who have pleaded not guilty to murder of the 12-year-old and other charges.

CBC blurred his face to protect his identity as required under a publication ban. A murder trial for a Burlington, Ont., couple who’d been caring for L. L. and his younger brother is ongoing. The boys’ biological family has filed a civil lawsuit as well. (Ontario Superior Court in Milton)

WARNING: This story details allegations of child abuse.

NOTE: This is the second part of a two-part series on the civil lawsuit filed by the biological family of the two boys. You can read the first story here.

A 12-year-old boy who passed away while being cared for by two Ontario women was “wrongly and excessively” prescribed medications by multiple doctors who didn’t evaluate him in person, according to a lawsuit brought by his biological family.

His younger brother faced similar overprescribing while living with Becky Hamber and Brandy Cooney in Burlington, as stated in the claim.

“The doctors clearly breached their professional duties,” it says. “Their negligent actions, particularly in their prescribing practices, directly contributed to the harm suffered by the children and ultimately to [the boy’s] death.”
