Authorities report that they have taken down an illegal cannabis growing operation in Brampton, confiscating over $1.5 million worth of cannabis.
The operation was uncovered on August 4 when Toronto police carried out a search warrant related to another investigation at a commercial unit on Rutherford Road South, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in a news release issued Wednesday.

Health Canada later verified that there were no registrations or licenses for cannabis connected with the property, as stated by the OPP.
The following day, officers from multiple police units executed another search warrant at the same commercial location.
Investigators seized nearly 4,000 cannabis plants at different growth stages, over 23 kilograms of processed cannabis, and $600 in Canadian cash.

Authorities mentioned that investigators also identified several safety issues linked to the operation, including problems with electrical systems and building safety standards.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and other organizations were called in to evaluate the property. Police confirmed there was ultimately no ongoing risk to public safety.
Two men aged 38 and 43 were arrested and charged with possession for distribution purposes and unauthorized cultivation under the Cannabis Act.
Both individuals were released from custody and are expected to appear in court on September 3 in Toronto.
