The city is set to pay tribute to OPP Provincial Const. Tarun Bali by renaming a park in honor of the Brampton officer who lost his life last week while on duty.
“Constable Bali was a young officer committed to keeping others safe,” said Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown about the 29-year-old who was struck by a vehicle last Tuesday in Hearst, northern Ontario, roughly 520 kilometres east of Thunder Bay.
“He served with courage, professionalism, and integrity as part of the OPP, and he made the ultimate sacrifice while striving to protect the public,” Brown remarked.
Bali had been with the OPP Dufferin Detachment for two and a half years and graduated from Fleming College’s Customs / Border Services program. Originally from Naya Nangal in India, about 358 kilometres north of New Delhi, he grew up in Brampton after his family immigrated.
Brown plans to present a motion at the Brampton City Council meeting to find an appropriate park and begin “the necessary steps to rename it in his memory.”
“He truly represented what it means to serve others, and we will remember him not only for his sacrifice but also for his dedication to safeguarding lives. My sincere condolences go out to his family, friends, and all who were lucky enough to know him.”
A funeral service for Bali is scheduled for Thursday morning at the Mississauga Sports and Entertainment Centre. Police indicated that it won’t be open to the public; however, family members along with fellow officers, military personnel, and other dignitaries are expected to attend.
The OPP has announced there will be a designated area for the public to watch both the procession and livestream of the funeral service.
An 18-year-old man faces several charges including first-degree murder related to Bali’s death. According to OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique, this suspect was driving the vehicle that hit Bali on Tuesday afternoon while fleeing police after escaping from a hospital where he was being evaluated under the Mental Health Act.
Bali was one of two Ontario police officers killed last week. Toronto Police Service Const. Marc Pinizzotto from Mississauga was shot dead on Thursday; that city also intends to name a park in his honor.
