Four residents from Brampton are facing serious charges related to firearms and drug trafficking after Ontario Provincial Police found a loaded handgun and suspected illegal substances during a traffic stop in Grey County.

On the evening of June 7, officers from the Grey Bruce OPP were out on proactive patrols in the Municipality of Grey Highlands when an Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) camera flagged a vehicle for violating the Highway Traffic Act while it was on Margaret Elizabeth Avenue.

Police pulled over the vehicle around 8:36 p. m. During their investigation, they noticed what they described as the smell of cannabis, which led to a more thorough search under the Cannabis Control Act.

According to OPP reports, officers discovered a loaded 9mm handgun inside the car, along with about 36 grams of suspected cocaine and 37 grams of suspected fentanyl.

Following this investigation, four individuals from Brampton were arrested and charged.

Toure Smith, 19; Taque Roy, 20; Brianna Carty, 19; and Shayanna Wynter, 22; all face several charges related to firearms, including possession of a loaded restricted firearm, unauthorized possession of a restricted firearm, and possession of Schedule I substances for trafficking purposes.

Roy is also facing extra charges under the Highway Traffic Act and Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act for operating a vehicle without a validated permit and driving without insurance.

All four suspects were held in custody while awaiting bail hearings on June 8 at the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound.

Grey Highlands is located in Grey County, roughly 150 kilometers northwest of Brampton and about 50 kilometers south of Owen Sound.

These charges have yet to be proven in court.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to reach out to Grey County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
