Progressive Conservative MPP Hardeep Grewal is under fire with an election finance complaint after the opposition claims he didn’t disclose campaign ads in a newspaper owned by his family.
Grewal defeated NDP’s Gurratan Singh in 2022 for the Brampton East seat and secured it again during the 2025 snap election.
However, the Ontario NDP contends that during his initial campaign, Grewal – who is also being questioned for billing taxpayers approximately $27,000 for hotel stays in downtown Toronto – did not report advertising expenses linked to a newspaper owned by his family.
Public records indicate that Hardeep Grewal’s father, Jagdish, operates the Punjabi Post, which is a local newspaper in Punjabi within Peel Region.
The paper has run sizable ads promoting Grewal’s candidacy.
The NDP has filed a complaint with the integrity commissioner regarding some of these promotions, claiming public funds were transferred from Grewal’s office to his father’s business.

Now, they are broadening their complaint to include allegations of election finance violations due to unreported free s in the Punjabi Post during 2022 – including placements that supposedly occurred during blackout periods when all advertising is prohibited.
“We can’t find any evidence that Mr. Grewal paid for ads placed in his father’s newspaper during the election period and you can’t do that; it would be like receiving a gift,” said Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles to .
“If that’s true, then Elections Ontario needs to look into it.”
While Grewal acknowledged that the ads weren’t reported, he attributed it to an error that has since been fixed.
“The 2022 s were billed by the Punjabi Post to our campaign but were mistakenly not paid,” stated the MPP in a message sent to via his party.
“They have now been settled and I’ve contacted Elections Ontario for further guidance on how to resolve this matter.”
.Grewal firmly denied those accusations stating they are untrue.

The NDP claims that Grewal promoted his campaign through the Punjabi Post from May 18 until June 2-election day-of 2022. They assert that campaign expense reports don’t show any payments made to this publication.
