Two individuals have lost their lives following a shooting that took place in the schoolyard of a Brampton elementary school late Friday, according to Peel police.

Around 10:30 p. m., shots were fired on the grounds of St. Joachim Elementary School, located near Rutherford Road and Weybridge Trail, as stated by Peel police during a news conference Saturday morning.

The victims, a man in his 20s and a young male, were shot and pronounced dead at the scene, reported Cst. Laurie Mc Cann, spokesperson for Peel Regional Police (PRP). She mentioned that multiple assailants may have been involved in firing the shots.

“There was some sort of altercation that occurred in the school grounds with several individuals,” she told reporters Saturday.

Police are actively searching for suspects who escaped before officers arrived at the location.

“We are unsure at this time if they fled on foot or got into a vehicle,” Mc Cann said.

Mc Cann noted that PRP’s homicide unit is looking into the case and that officers will maintain a significant presence in the area.

Investigators are examining any connections between the suspects and victims but believe this shooting was intentional.

In a statement Saturday, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown expressed his “heartfelt condolences” to those affected by this tragedy including family members and friends of the victims.

“While this incident is not connected to the school itself and there is no threat to public safety, any act of gun violence is one too many,” he said.

Brown emphasized that this situation serves as a “stark reminder” of how essential it is for all levels of government to unite in addressing issues surrounding illegal firearms.

“We recognize how unsettling incidents like this are and the impact they can have on our community, and our priority remains the safety and wellbeing of our city,” he said.

Authorities urge anyone with information, video footage or who might have witnessed the shooting to reach out to them.
