A 15-storey residential building will take the place of two popular fast-food spots at a mall in Mississauga.
This new structure will be built at Sherwood Village – also known as Sheridan Mall – located at the north end of the site, where Erin Mills Parkway meets Lincoln Green Way.
To clear space for this development, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and Taco Bell will be torn down.
The apartment complex is among the first to emerge as the mall site transforms to meet what planners believe are future community needs. Another residential building is also on the drawing board for a spot at the back of the mall, on Fowler Drive close to North Sheridan Way.
Together, these two buildings will provide 631 residential units.
In time, more high-rise developments are anticipated to change the face of this mall property.
Further modifications are expected along Erin Mills Parkway’s edge of the mall.
While Mc Donald’s will continue its operations, plans for an adjacent former Pizza Pizza location suggest it could become another takeout restaurant, as permission has been granted for a drive-through lane.
Though not officially confirmed yet, there have been rumors about a Starbucks coming to this location. Alternatively, KFC/Taco Bell might move into the old Pizza Pizza spot that’s currently under renovation.
Approval for these apartments was negotiated with Mississauga’s City after the property owner took their case to Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT), which manages land-use disputes in Ontario.
Sheridan Mall is one of Mississauga’s oldest shopping centers, having opened its doors in 1969 and serving both local residents and surrounding areas as one of Toronto’s largest malls for many years.
Over time, it has hosted numerous major retailers like Eaton’s, Zellers and even Target during its brief stint. Smaller shops that left their mark include Laura Secord, Music World, St. Clair Paint & Wallpaper, Radio Shack, Bittner’s, Lewiscraft, Grand & Toy, Bata Shoes, Coles Books, Becker’s Milk, Petland and Embassy Cleaners among others. A movie theater also attracted many visitors over its lifetime.
Some familiar names still exist today. Shoppers Drug Mart continues operations alongside Bank of Nova Scotia and Metro grocery store-formerly known as Dominion. The Mississauga Symphony Orchestra still holds its used book sale here every September.
In past years, the mall also hosted various events such as antique shows, music concerts, Santa visits during Christmas, and even beauty pageants like Miss Mississauga. Children used to enjoy playing on soft stacked blocks right in the center area of the mall.
But times have changed.
Now, few retail stores remain as current offerings include a golf simulation center, pickleball courts , and an athletic training facility.
Il Fornello, a well-known casual fine-dining restaurant , has also found its way into this location.< p data -start ="3088 Even the name has undergone several changes throughout the years while adapting to attract new customers.
