Jadyn Keeler, a 23-year-old from Barrie, Ontario, made headlines by breaking the Canadian half-marathon record at the 2026 World Road Racing Championships held in Copenhagen. She finished with an impressive time of 1:08:03 during only her second race at this distance. Her first half-marathon was a victory at the national championships in Edmonton, Alberta on August 16.

Keeler improved the previous national record of 1:09:38 set by Andrea Seccafien in Marugame, Japan, back in 2020, by shaving off 1:35. Seccafien had just surpassed Natasha Wodak’s record that was achieved two weeks earlier in Houston, TX with a time of 1:09:41. Interestingly, Wodak served as Keeler’s team captain for the race in Copenhagen.

Barrie (population: 167,000) is situated about 90 to 95 kilometers north of Toronto along Lake Ontario.

Keeler pursued her education at the University of North Dakota where she studied microbiology.

The interview

Christopher Kelsall: Congrats on your amazing run and new national record in Copenhagen! What were you hoping to achieve regarding your time and position going into the World Road Running Championships half-marathon?

Jadyn Keeler: Thanks so much! I aimed to break the Canadian national record of 1:09:38 for my time goal and was aiming for a top-20 finish overall. I had an excellent four-week training block at altitude leading up to it and felt like I was in peak shape. I’m really proud to have achieved both goals there!

CK: Can you walk me through how you approached the race? Did you collaborate with your Team Canada teammates during it?

JK: My plan for the first five kilometers was to find a group running at my pace but that didn’t quite work out since the race started fast; I ended up running mostly alone after about two kilometers. Eventually, I caught up with another runner who I stayed with for most of the race. When I hit the ten-kilometer mark in a personal best of 31:49, I knew I was moving quickly and did my best to keep that pace going into the second half. The other runner and I worked together to catch some competitors from ahead who were part of a chase pack before finishing strong with a new Canadian record of 1:08:03-it definitely exceeded what I’d hoped for!

CK: How beneficial was having Natasha Wodak as your team captain?

“Copenhagen was actually not on my radar until the end of June when I finished up my track season. I was just transitioning to working with my new professional coach and was trying to determine what races to target next. Natasha actually reached out to me and suggested I race the Canadian Half-Marathon Championships in August…”

JK: Having Natasha lead our team as captain was incredibly helpful! With years of experience competing at world championships and Olympics under her belt, she guided me well through my first world championship event. Natasha gives solid advice; she’s an inspiring role model who makes being around her enjoyable too! I’ve always admired her work ethic within our sport; sharing that starting line with her felt like such an honor.

CK: You’ve set five new personal bests this year alone but your performance during this half-marathon really stood out-was Copenhagen something you’d been gearing up for all year or did all those previous races contribute naturally towards better fitness?

JK: Actually, Copenhagen wasn’t even on my radar until late June when my track season wrapped up! At that point, I began transitioning into working with my new pro coach while figuring out which upcoming races would be ideal targets next! It turns out Natasha recommended competing at those Canadian Half-Marathon Championships back in August which helped qualify me for these World Championships here.. During July training sessions though-given decent fitness retained from prior tracks-I feel like it helped build even more strength leading right into this event!

CK:Naturally then-Natasha clearly sees potential talent! Post-college life brings changes-how has weekly training volume shifted? After racing over twenty-one times since January-is aerobic development getting bolstered through these volumes each week?
JK:I’ve increased weekly mileage slightly but not dramatically different than college days honestly.. Mainly consistency stands apart now compared before where regular racing often meant lower volume every alternate week instead now being pro has allowed continuous high-volume weeks enabling optimal aerobic growth opportunities!

CK:What does one typical week look like during training?
JK:Tuesdays & Fridays are dedicated workout days mostly focused threshold/aerobic runs prepping particularly targeted towards upcoming halves.. Sundays usually feature long runs followed by easy jogs filling other gaps alongside strides interspersed throughout various weekdays!

CK:Do long runs excite you more or do sessions bring greater joy through nailing splits perfectly too?
JK:I genuinely love both types equally though workouts might take precedence if pushed towards picking favorites-the thrill lies within pushing limits beyond perceived barriers experienced consistently-as stepping beyond comfort zones feeds confidence fueling successful outcomes once lined upon starting blocks come big day(s) ahead!!

CK:A significant weekly total accumulated recently?! Would make sense given newfound dedication elsewhere away from collegiate systems!!JK:Peak mileage reached throughout mid-preparations revolved around approximately eighty miles (128 kms) highest recorded thus far-my aim pushes upwards above hundred miles (160 km) sometime later this fall!!Team Canada from left to R : Élissa Legault , Florence Caron , Natasha Wodak , all holding Jadyn Keeler. CK : Just curious-as someone studying microbiology -have you taken samples yourself sending them off perhaps gene testing determining elite endurance genetics ?

< JK : Never done any genetic tests yet although always wanted ! Analyzing genes could reveal interesting markers correlating against superior endurance performances !

< CK : Looking ahead towards pursuing Ph D studies microbiology down road-or had enough schooling already ?

< JK : Currently focusing solely upon professional athlete lifestyle adapting accordingly-though considering pursuing Master ’ s/Ph D further along timeline eventually !

< CK : You've competed successfully across distances varying between fifteen hundred meters stretching clear toward halves —personal preference leaning mid vs long distance competing/training wise ?

< JK : Absolutely drawn longer events ultimately; life's history emphasizes improvement parallel distance increases alike performing better personally whenever facing such circumstances matched against opponents respective levels !!

< CK : Growing roots planted Barrie ON–did many outings spent near Kempenfelt Bay throughout youth years ?
