Residents of Barrie and Simcoe County should keep an eye on the weather today, as Environment Canada indicates that conditions are ripe for a major severe weather event this afternoon and evening.

An initial wave of thunderstorms passed through the area early this morning, bringing heavy rain, frequent lightning, and strong wind gusts. However, Environment Canada forecaster Daniel Sheldon told Barrie 360 that the main concern is a second round of storms anticipated later today.

The morning storms resulted in significant rainfall in certain areas. Sheldon mentioned that regions upstream of Barrie saw “over twenty, perhaps even locally over thirty millimeters of rain in a short time,” which raises worries about localized flooding and poor visibility for drivers during heavy downpours.

While conditions may briefly improve from mid to late morning, meteorologists are keeping a close watch on what might develop later in the day.

“The environment today is quite volatile,” Sheldon said. “So the ceiling for severe weather today is kind of higher than it usually is, probably one of the higher potential days that we’ve had this season so far.”

The most concerning timeframe is expected from mid to late afternoon continuing into at least the mid-evening hours. Sheldon noted there’s still some uncertainty regarding where the most intense storms will hit but emphasized that Barrie remains firmly within the risk zone.

“There’s a potential Barrie and area, you can be right in the thick of it,” he said. “There’s also the potential that the most intense weather could actually be just slightly to the south of you. But you’re definitely in the risk.”

If severe thunderstorms form as predicted, possible hazards include golf ball-sized hail, destructive wind gusts exceeding 110 km/h and even isolated tornadoes.

Heavy rainfall will also be an ongoing concern as warm, moisture-laden air moves into the area. Sheldon indicated storms are likely to progress quickly but could still produce very intense bursts of rain.

“Downpours are going to be like just like a tropical downpour,” he said. “Lots of lightning too.”

Environment Canada encourages residents to stay updated throughout the day by following forecasts, watches and warnings. People should secure loose outdoor items, ensure they have ways to receive emergency weather alerts and seek shelter immediately if threatening weather approaches.
