Authorities in Barrie, Ont., report that they found human skeletal remains close to where a double homicide occurred last summer, but detectives are currently considering this as a separate case.
The police received a call about the remains on Aug. 13 near Anne Street South and Tiffin Street and later confirmed they are indeed human.
They stated it would be “inappropriate” to make assumptions about the remains so early in the investigation and will provide updates if any connection between the cases comes to light.
Last summer, officers discovered human remains at an encampment located in a large wooded area surrounded by Victoria, John, and Anne streets in Barrie.
Robert Ladouceur, 53, was subsequently charged with murdering and dismembering two men he once knew who lived with him at a homeless encampment after another set of remains was uncovered at a property in Huntsville, Ont.
Police believe that these double homicides were targeted; what began as a missing persons investigation grew into one of the largest inquiries Barrie police have ever managed.
Officials say provincial police are searching for more evidence regarding the recently found remains in nearby Lake Simcoe, while Barrie officers are securing the scene until their search is complete.
