Allison Hurst reports from the scene where a person was found dead inside of a house in Mississauga that was gutted by fire on Monday night.

A body has been discovered inside a house in Mississauga that was destroyed by flames on Monday night.

Officials announced the news late Tuesday afternoon, stating that the Office of the Chief Coroner will investigate the cause of death for that individual, while the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal will work to find out what started the fire and how it happened.

Peel Regional Police (PRP) will also look into any potential criminal activity arising from these investigations.

“What I can say right now is that we’ve accounted for the individuals that are supposed to be in the residence. They’re out of the country right now,” Const. Tyler Bell said early Tuesday evening.

“So right now, we’ve got the difficult task of trying to ascertain who is the individual.”

The fire, which also resulted in an explosion, broke out at around 10:40 p. m. on Monday at a house on Select Court which is just west of Mc Laughlin Road and north of Eglinton Avenue West.

Initially, police reported no injuries from the blaze as it was believed nobody was inside at that time.

Platoon Chief Dave Shaw noted there were initial claims suggesting there may have been eight people inside when it happened.

“So it was an enormous relief when crews confirmed nobody was inside,” he told reporters at the scene.

Mississauga Fire stated that those living in the home are currently in Vietnam.

Bell from PRP added that all residents within including those upstairs and a tenant below have since been accounted for.

“We have no reason to believe that anyone should have been in the home that’s associated with residents at this time,” he said.

Fire being investigated as ‘suspicious’

This incident is currently being treated as “suspicious” according to police reports; however so far there’s nothing obvious indicating any criminal involvement occurred.

“These investigations can be complex. As debris gets taken away for analysis more evidence may come to light but right now nothing stands out suggesting this is a criminal case,” he said.

“And like most sudden death inquiries, we treat them as suspicious until proven otherwise.”

Heavy equipment to do ‘thorough search’

The media officer mentioned heavy machinery would likely arrive Wednesday to carry out “a more thorough search.”

He explained: “The structure currently isn’t stable; that’s why no one has gone inside yet for further investigation.” He added: “As we proceed with our inquiry we’ll learn more about what actually took place – whether it began with an explosion followed by flames or if it went down differently.”

    Residents react

People living nearby expressed shock over what unfolded especially upon learning about finding someone’s body among ruins. The neighborhood witnessed horror together during chaos. “We were just settling down when suddenly there was this loud boom,” recounted one local resident speaking to Toronto. Another resident named Stella echoed similar sentiments sharing her experience feeling helpless yet scared witnessing everything unfold outside her window. “My husband and I dashed outside after hearing huge explosions while lying together terrified,” she remarked. Some concerned neighbors promptly dialed emergency services watching flames engulfing property unfolding before their eyes. “Everyone around panicked! We feared for our own homes even thinking fires could spread here too!” another member shared recounting events outside. One neighbor described frantic moments collecting essential belongings hurriedly fearing they’d lose everything. “Oh my goodness! It exploded so violently creating flares whipping towards us through wind currents!”Residents expressed concern over families residing within their devastated homes including young children belonging therein. “We instinctively wanted help somehow…but honestly going near such fires isn’t wise” stated Stella expressing regret later reflecting back recalling how things unfolded. “What else could I do besides alerting authorities hoping they’d arrive soon?”

The report includes details from Janice Golding at Toronto’s office reporting alongside others involved covering ongoing updates surrounding investigations taking place concerning tragic events observed previously reported earlier today..
