Wellington OPP have reported that five people have died following a two-vehicle crash in Mapleton Township on Friday evening.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene at the intersection of Wellington Road 12 and 4th Line, close to Conestogo Lake Conservation Area, around 7:30 p. m.
According to police, a van with 10 passengers collided with an SUV that had one person inside at the intersection.
The accident resulted in five children aged four to 12 being pronounced dead. OPP stated that four adults, one infant, and the driver of the SUV sustained serious injuries and were either treated on-site, taken to a local hospital, or airlifted to various trauma centers.
Three individuals were airlifted to trauma centers with serious injuries, while several others were transported to local hospitals.
The OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement team was present and is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
As a result, the intersection of 4th Line and Wellington Road 12 is closed in all directions. The public is advised to use alternate routes.
