A multi‑vehicle crash on Highway 1, just east of Portage la Prairie near Oakville on Friday, led to a Code Orange alert at Portage District General Hospital. Fortunately, officials report that all patients are now in stable condition.
The incident, which involved several vehicles, took place earlier in the afternoon. Emergency Medical Services transported all individuals from the scene to the hospital, where they were quickly triaged and assessed by staff.
Southern Health‑Santé Sud officials briefly activated the Code Orange, a protocol for mass-casualty situations that brings in extra resources and personnel to handle a large number of patients. This alert prompted a call for additional doctors, nurses, and support staff to assist with the emergency response.
The Code Orange was lifted at 2:14 p. m., with hospital officials confirming that all patients admitted from the accident were stable.
In an earlier message, hospital officials noted that some roads nearby were unsafe or closed and requested that staff come only if they could do so safely.
The Portage Fire Department indicated that emergency crews have cleared the collision site. RCMP remained present into the afternoon as tow trucks worked on removing damaged vehicles.
No further details regarding what caused the crash or how severe any injuries might be have been released yet.
Officials expressed gratitude towards hospital staff and emergency responders for their swift and coordinated actions during this situation.
