THUNDER BAY – An investigation by the Thunder Bay Police Service Major Crime Unit has resulted in a manslaughter charge after authorities discovered a deceased individual, later identified as 36-year-old Kelsey Anderson. The case is currently in court and is still an ongoing criminal matter.

Suspect Arrested in Connection with Death

Thunder Bay police report that officers found and arrested a suspect on June 6, 2026, related to Anderson’s death.

Dion Mc Kay, 33, from Thunder Bay, has been charged with manslaughter.

Further details about the circumstances surrounding Anderson’s death have not been released by the police, including where she was located or the suspected cause of death.

Mc Kay remains in custody following his first court appearance.

Understanding the Manslaughter Charge

Manslaughter is covered under the Criminal Code of Canada within its homicide provisions. Section 234 indicates that culpable homicide which isn’t classified as murder or infanticide falls under manslaughter. Section 236 outlines the penalties for manslaughter. This offense is indictable, with a maximum potential sentence of life imprisonment.

If a firearm is involved in committing the crime, the Criminal Code sets a minimum prison sentence of four years.

Sentencing for manslaughter can vary greatly since it encompasses a wide range of situations and levels of moral responsibility.

A review by Justice Canada regarding manslaughter sentencing highlighted that courts tend to treat this offense flexibly, with penalties heavily influenced by each case’s specific facts along with aggravating and mitigating factors as well as the offender’s situation.

No allegations have been proven yet in court. Mc Kay is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Community Response in Thunder Bay

Investigations by Major Crime Units attract significant public interest in Thunder Bay due to their serious nature and often leave families, neighbors, and the wider community searching for answers.

At this point, police have shared limited information; more details are likely to come out through court proceedings or future updates from law enforcement.

If anyone has information relevant to this investigation, they should reach out to Thunder Bay Police Service or Crime Stoppers.
