Ottawa firefighters reported that a resident in a townhome unit on Russell Road passed away in a fire late Thursday night.

According to their news release, they received the call around 10:50 p. m. regarding the end unit of a townhome complex situated near the General campus of The Ottawa Hospital.

The flames had also spread to the adjacent unit, they noted.

Four individuals managed to escape from their home, but one person could not make it out and lost their life. Firefighters did not disclose that person’s identity, stating it is unclear if those inside were family members.

A total of ten people have been displaced from their homes and are receiving assistance from the Red Cross, as mentioned in the news release.

Three other adults were evaluated for minor injuries by Ottawa paramedics.

Sam Ankenmann, who lives in a building behind the townhome, was getting ready for bed with his wife when they noticed a light coming from their neighbors’ place.

The fire was brought under control by midnight and is currently being investigated by both the provincial fire marshal and Ottawa police’s arson and explosion unit.

Ottawa Fire Chief Paul Hutt stated there’s no evidence indicating that the fire was suspicious; however, an investigation by Ontario’s Fire Marshal is still required.
