Hurontario Street in Mississauga has been recognized as one of the worst roads in Ontario for four consecutive years. Ongoing work on the Hazel Mc Callion Line has added to the frustrations felt by drivers and local businesses.
Mississauga has quite a bit of work ahead – major improvements are needed – according to findings from an annual survey by the CAA.
One key route in Canada’s seventh-largest city appears to need urgent attention.
Having appeared in the top 10 on the CAA’s annual list of Ontario’s worst roads for three straight years, Hurontario Street in Mississauga has climbed even higher, now sitting at second place in the most recent rankings, which were released Thursday morning by the South Central Ontario chapter of the organization.
The section of Hurontario Street that runs through Mississauga is one of the busiest streets in town, only falling behind Barton Street East in Hamilton on this year’s list (see below).
This heavily traveled route was ranked fifth both last year and in 2024 after first entering the rankings at tenth place in 2023.
The CAA’s Worst Roads rankings are based each year on public feedback regarding roads that are considered to be in poor condition or pose safety concerns across Ontario.
The annual CAA survey highlights Ontario’s worst roads as reported by residents.
Hurontario Street, which has seen significant construction due to work related to the Hazel Mc Callion Line light-rail transit project, is currently the only road from Peel region included on this latest top 10 list from CAA.
Apart from the top two entries this year, Notre Dame Avenue in Sudbury is identified as Ontario’s third-worst road. Sider Road in Fort Erie and Steeles Avenue East in Toronto round out spots four and five respectively.

In its findings this year, CAA also identifies the worst roads within ten specific regions throughout Ontario.
Mississauga falls within a group that includes Brampton along with Halton, York and Durham regions.
The five worst roads listed for Peel/Halton/York/Durham area according to these latest rankings are:
Hurontario Street, Mississauga Dundas Street East, Mississauga Glen Erin Drive, Mississauga Speers Road, Oakville Mayfield Road, Brampton
C AA launched its 23rd Worst Roads advocacy campaign back in late March. This initiative aims to provide decision-makers across municipalities a clear picture of what residents feel about their local roads’ conditions.
“Poor roads affect us all. They make us late; cause delivery delays; contribute to congestion; and most importantly endanger those who use them,” stated CAA when introducing its current campaign earlier this spring.
Over recent months people have been visiting CAA’s website to vote for streets filled with potholes or other issues like heavy traffic congestion and unsafe bicycle lanes.
Historically speaking respondents have pointed out potholes and lackluster road maintenance as their biggest issues faced while traveling these routes.
Pothole-related damage can cost vehicle owners anywhere from $500 up to $2 ,000 depending upon car model-CAA officials previously noted that average repair costs now sit around $933-a rise of $81 compared with last year’s figure.
