An emergency alert sent out in the Greater Toronto Area just hours after a woman was fatally stabbed in Pickering is raising concerns about how quickly the message was delivered, as well as its classification as “terrorism” on certain platforms.
Shortly after 3 p. m. on Thursday, Durham Regional Police reported that they responded to a home on Lynn Heights Drive, close to Whites Road North and Finch Avenue, following calls about a woman being stabbed multiple times. She was taken to a hospital but unfortunately passed away.
Durham Regional Police Chief Peter Moreira described the stabbing as a “sadistic and cowardly unprovoked attack.”
The first generic warning from officers appeared on the service’s X account at 4:49 p. m.
“There is a heavy police presence in the area of Fairport Road and Lynn Heights Drive in Pickering. Police are urging residents to shelter in place,” read the post.
“An adult female has been transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre after being assaulted where she has been pronounced deceased. An unknown suspect remains outstanding. Updates to follow.”
An emergency alert was then broadcasted to mobile devices around Pickering, along with parts of Toronto and Durham Region at 5:39 p. m.
“The Durham Regional Police investigating (sic) a homicide suspect in 2125 Lynn Heights Drive. Suspect 1 unknown male. Police request that the public shelter in place. Please monitor local media for further updates on this matter,” stated the alert.
Officers later announced via X that there would be a media update at 7 p. m. Almost thirty minutes afterward, Moreira addressed reporters and explained how multiple services were involved to assist with the situation.
However, when the alert went out, it appeared on some sites like The Weather Network labeled as “terrorism.” When asked about this classification, Moreira acknowledged it.
“That certainly wasn’t part of our message, and not the message that we had put out,” Moreira said.
“I’m not sure how that came out to be, but I’ve reviewed what we put out to the OPP.”
City News inquired about why there was such a delay before the shelter-in-place warning reached cellphones.
“There’s a period of time in which we want to make sure that we understand what has happened so that we can provide accurate information to the community and that we understand fully what it is that we’re asking the community to do on our behalf,” Moreira explained.
An hour later he reported that police had taken a teenager into custody. The accused is a 14-year-old whose identity cannot be revealed under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act; he appeared at an Oshawa court Friday morning charged with first-degree murder. The allegations against him have not been proven yet.
A publication ban imposed by the court also applies to various identifying posts across social media platforms.
