Firefighters are currently tackling a significant blaze at a scrap metal yard in Brampton. Authorities are urging residents to steer clear of the area near Intermodal and Goreway Drives.

Fire crews are still dealing with a “stubborn” fire at the Brampton scrap yard, which has caused thick black smoke to spread across the Greater Toronto Area.

Brampton Fire and Emergency Services (BFES) received the call about the commercial property fire at 4:18 p. m. in the vicinity of Goreway and Intermodal Drives.

“Upon arrival, there was heavy fire and smoke visible from a large scrap yard fire,” BFES Deputy Fire Chief Michael Waite informed reporters just before 8 p. m., four hours into their firefighting efforts.

“This is a very active fire scene, a very stubborn fire. We’re still working to extinguish it.”

Footage from Chopper 24 shows fierce flames engulfing heaps of metal scrap. A sizable plume of smoke can also be seen wafting over nearby Highway 407.

The smoke is even visible from Pearson International Airport, but operations there have not been affected by the incident.

Waite mentioned that BFES has alerted the Ministry of Environment, Peel Region Spills, and Mississauga Fire “out of an abundance of caution” because of the smoke.

“This is a very, very difficult and challenging fire. It’s deeply seated,” he added.

No injuries have been reported so far. The cause and circumstances surrounding the blaze remain unclear.

Waite noted that crews are using heavy machinery along with property personnel to access the heart of the fire.

“We’ve determined that most of the burning is happening in the central part of the strap fire. Utilizing our drone, we’ve also pinpointed areas that concern us, and we’re targeting those spots with our high-volume water streams,” he stated.

He mentioned that crews will be on-site for an extended period, describing it as a “long-duration event.”

“I think it would be wise for anyone nearby to close any windows and doors inside their homes and turn off any ventilation systems for now,” Waite said.

Peel police media relations officer Tyler Bell told reporters that officers were initially called to help manage traffic since the blaze broke out during rush hour.

“We did notice considerable traffic congestion due to people slowing down to look. So we’re reminding everyone this isn’t an appropriate scene for spectators. We don’t know what’s burning or what could be hazardous, so please avoid it if you can,” Bell advised.

“If you find yourself stuck in traffic near here, as Deputy Chief Waite suggested, keep your windows up if possible. We’ll have officers present assisting as needed throughout the night.”

Intermodal Drive was closed for several hours but has since reopened.
