A federal judge in Virginia has temporarily stopped the Trump administration from moving any funds into a secretive and loosely managed $1.8 billion fund while a legal challenge is underway.

The ruling from US district judge Leonie Brinkema on Friday prevents the government from “taking other further action” in establishing or managing the fund as legal discussions about it continue. The order aims “to ensure no funds are irreversibly disbursed from the Anti-Weaponization Fund”, Brinkema stated.

The administration has indicated that anyone who feels victimized by government weaponization can file a claim to access the fund, which will be overseen by four commissioners chosen by the US attorney general and a fifth selected in consultation with congressional leaders.

There are no limits on who can apply for money from this fund, leading even some Republicans to voice their anger that individuals involved in the January 6 riots, who attacked police officers, might be eligible for compensation. Furthermore, the fund isn’t required to reveal how much money it distributes or why it does so, raising concerns that it’s basically a slush fund.

US judge temporarily blocks Trump’s $1.8bn ‘anti-weaponization’ fund

This decision from US district judge Leonie Brinkema, appointed by Bill Clinton, came after Democracy Forward filed a lawsuit aiming to stop the fund. The ruling is meant to maintain current conditions and was necessary after the government failed to guarantee that no funds would be transferred or paid before June 19, allowing sufficient time for arguments in this case.

These two versions suggest Trump might once again be using his “art of the deal” skills as he tries to negotiate his way out of a conflict that’s disrupted global energy supplies and shaken up economies worldwide.
