Durham Regional Police report that 42 traffic offenses were issued during a Hells Angels gathering in Whitby last month.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the police indicated that 172 vehicles went through checkpoints during the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club Canada Run event, which took place from July 22 to 24 at the Brooklin Hells Angels chapter.

Police mentioned that there were 30 provincial offense notices given under the Highway Traffic Act and 12 summonses.

Officers seized four license plates and five helmets. Four vehicles were either towed or taken out of service.

There were no “major incidents,” and police only had to respond to “minimal calls for service,” crediting their “robust, professional joint” response for this outcome.

The statement expressed gratitude to everyone who supported the operational plan over that weekend and thanked residents for their understanding.

“Previous annual events have shown that a strong visible police presence has helped to mitigate adverse impacts on communities,” police said.

“The collective planning and operations supported by OPP Biker Enforcement Unit and other police services from across Canada were instrumental in ensuring this event happened with no significant impact on community safety.”

Before the event, police shared information about what residents and businesses could expect. Officers also established a dedicated tip line for residents to report any criminal activity.

Around 600 members of Hells Angels and other clubs attended the event, according to police reports.

“While some have publicly questioned the need for a strong police presence for this event, it should be stressed that minimal impact on the community was by design not by accident,” the statement said.

“We also remind the community that the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club is an organized crime group that deals in the trafficking of guns and drugs.”

The statement noted that having more officers present led to more club members being transported via bus rather than participating in a large motorcycle run through the area.

This gathering in Durham Region followed a memorial procession held by Hells Angels from Newmarket to Toronto on July 21 in honor of Donny Petersen, who was head of Toronto’s chapter before he passed away in December 2021.
