Hegseth on National Guard troops in DC: ‘We’re going to surge this summer’

Trump has urged that the number of US National Guard troops stationed in Washington DC should remain unchanged.

“Keep them, and don’t lower the number, either. Somebody said, ‘Oh, are there less?’ I said, ‘I hope not, but don’t lower the number, if you don’t mind,” Trump said.

In response, defense secretary Pete Hegseth stated: “We’re going to surge this summer too.”

Analysis: Trump’s hold on the GOP is stronger than ever. What about America?

Ken Paxton’s clear win in a Texas runoff – marking one of the largest primary defeats for an incumbent US senator in nearly fifty years – underscores Trump’s remarkable loyalty among his supporters. Meanwhile, Democrats remain hopeful that Paxton’s extreme views and troubled history could sway unhappy voters away from Cornyn.

Paxton’s victory has boosted Democratic hopes that they might win a statewide office in Texas for the first time in over thirty years, aided by traditional Republicans and Latino voters returning from their support for the GOP.

Donald Trump indicated on Wednesday that he intends to attend this year’s NBA finals after witnessing the New York Knicks secure their spot earlier this week.

Trump, who hails from New York, has counted James Dolan – owner of both the Knicks and NHL’s Rangers as well as Madison Square Garden – as a friend and campaign contributor lately. The president mentioned he received invitations to attend from Dolan and “numerous” others.

“Jim Dolan’s great guy; he owns … Madison Square Garden. He’s having a good year. Boy, what a team. They won all their games. They really have some great players,” Trump told reporters during a cabinet meeting. “I think I’ll be going to one of the games; yeah. I was invited by numerous people and Jim – and I think I’ll be going. Great to see. The Knicks have really suffered for years; they’re doing right now very well.”

Republican leaders quickly rallied around Ken Paxton after his significant primary victory over four-term senator John Cornyn amid worries within the party regarding his chances come November.

Shortly after results were announced, Donald Trump – who supported Paxton despite concerns from establishment Republicans – took to Truth Social to criticize his Democratic opponent in upcoming elections.

James Talarico “may be the worst Texas candidate I have ever seen,” said Trump while claiming that Talarico was weak on crime and supported open borders.

Drawing upon a common Republican criticism against Talarico, Trump claimed he was a vegan who “dislikes meat; not exactly a good way to be if you’re wanting to win an Election in Texas.”

Three Democratic state attorneys general reported their deputies were denied entry into a roundtable event hosted by JD Vance on Tuesday amidst confusion surrounding what has been described by White House officials as bipartisan action against fraud.

After AGs like New York’s Letitia James and California’s Rob Bonta declined last-minute invitations alongside their Republican counterparts for participation at Vance’s event designed to tackle government program fraud issues-representatives from their offices still traveled but were turned away upon arrival.

“My deputy attorney general went to Washington DC today but unfortunately wasn’t granted access to join meeting,” James told reporters during Tuesday’s press conference following Vance gathering more than twelve Republican state attorneys general under President Biden’s campaign against fraud.

The White House didn’t respond when asked for comments regarding this incident with reports indicating representatives from Democratic AG offices located within Oregon and Connecticut had managed attendance at Vance’s roundtable discussion.
