Flags have been lowered to half-staff at the county’s administration centre in Midhurst; the Oro-Medonte landfill will stay closed until further notice.

Officials confirmed that an employee lost their life Monday morning while on duty at a landfill managed by Simcoe County.

Emergency services, including Ontario Provincial Police and Oro-Medonte Fire and Emergency Services, responded to the landfill on Old Barrie Road around 8:30 a. m. on Dec. 1 after someone was hit by a commercial vehicle transporting garbage.

The police started an investigation, but later Orillia OPP officials informed Barrie Today that the Ministry of Labour had been contacted and is now overseeing the inquiry.

A representative from the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development confirmed they were made aware of a workplace incident in Simcoe County.

“It was reported that a worker was struck by a vehicle and later succumbed to their injuries,” the spokesperson said.

Inspectors are looking into the incident, but the ministry spokesperson stated that no additional details can be shared at this time.

A statement on the County of Simcoe’s website also verified that county employees were involved in the incident and that one person had died.

“Our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues affected by this tragic loss,” the statement read. “We remain committed to supporting our staff and ensuring they have access to all necessary resources.”

Due to the ongoing investigation and out of respect for the family’s privacy, county officials mentioned that no further information would be released.

The landfill will continue to remain closed until further notice because of this ongoing investigation.

Flags have also been lowered to half-staff at the county’s administration centre in Midhurst.

If anyone has information, they can contact the Ministry of Labour at 1-877-202-0008.
