A father is facing charges of impaired driving causing bodily harm and death after a pick-up truck collided head-on with an OPP cruiser near Perth.
Matthew Bigras, 40, from Ottawa, is also charged with dangerous driving resulting in bodily harm and death.
His son, Michael, was in the truck along with another adult passenger when it struck a marked Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) vehicle on Highway 7 in December 2025. The crash occurred between Drummond School Road and Drummond Concession 7, just east of Perth.
Emergency responders tried to revive the young boy before airlifting him to a trauma center.
Michael died on impact after being thrown from the vehicle through the windshield, his mother told City News previously. She said he suffered severe injuries that he couldn’t recover from and was officially declared brain dead days before his 11th birthday.
Both Bigras and the other passenger were hospitalized with serious injuries. The OPP officer involved was also taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
A fundraiser set up to assist with family expenses and funeral costs raised over $80,000. It mentions that Bigras was returning home from their trailer when the truck hit a patch of black ice, sending it into oncoming traffic.
Bigras has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Perth on Aug. 24.
