Read more A city council in Canada is borrowing a tactic from U. S. politics and plans to rename its street that currently honors Donald Trump – aiming for a bit of fun at his expense. The Ottawa City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to change Trump Avenue, which is located in its Central Park neighborhood. This street was named after Trump around 25 years ago and reflects one of several nods made through street names toward New York City. Other streets include titles like “Staten Way,” “Madison Park,” and “Gotham Private.” Among new names being considered by the council are options like “Obama Avenue” and “TACO Avenue,” according to CNN. Obama served as president before Trump took office in 2016 and has often been targeted by Trump’s criticism. The name “TACO” supposedly refers to a phrase used on Wall Street about Trump: “Trump Always Chickens Out,” highlighting his frequent policy reversals. Ottawa City Councilor Tim Tierney told CNN that additional potential names for Trump Avenue include; Obama Avenue, Ontario Avenue, Canada Avenue, Beaver Avenue, Gulf of Mexico Avenue, Canada Goose Avenue, Pelosi Avenue, and Rosie O’Donnell Avenue-a nod towards Trump’s long-standing dislike for the comedian. The Ottawa City Council has unanimously decided it’s time for a new name (Google Maps) Tensions have risen between Canada and the U. S. after Trump’s decision imposed a 50 percent tariff on Canadian steel, cars, and auto parts. Efforts were made by representatives from both countries trying to negotiate an agreement but those discussions broke down completely. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that Canada would retaliate with equal tariffs on numerous American products starting September 8 while also looking into stronger trade relationships with European partners. This week saw Trump announce he signed an executive order changing Lake Ontario’s name to Lake America despite it having been called Lake Ontario long before Canada even existed as a country. Tierney mentioned that there are places elsewhere in Canada carrying “Trump” in their titles where residents have suggested renaming them; however, he pointed out that only this particular street in Ottawa was directly named after him. He also shared that there was an attempt back in 2021 for another name change but they let local residents decide what they wanted; among 62 residents surveyed-21 supported changing it while another 21 opposed it with two abstaining from voting altogether. He explained that some people against changing might not have favored keeping Trump’s name but were reluctant due to address changes inconveniences. Tierney remarked that while renaming could be amusing, it shouldn’t overshadow serious matters straining relations between Canada and the U. S. President Donald Trump signs an executive order changing Lake Ontario’s name to ‘Lake America’ amid his trade war with Canada (Getty) “Right now I think our focus has got to stay on trade and tariffs because this issue merely serves as distraction,” he expressed during an interview with CNN. “We see this kind of move happening often with presidents; it’s getting old fast-let’s stop playing these naming games and focus back at negotiations.” His views resonate with Canada’s Minister of Industry Mélanie Joly who dismissed Trump’s “shenanigans” asserting instead that Canada’s strategy will focus on enhancing trade partnerships.“While all these antics take place we’ll just be smart about things strategically and push back,” Joly commented during her press statement. Trump has voiced complaints about Canada repeatedly recently referring it as “the worst country” regarding negotiations while accusing them of exploiting their trading relationship.
When asked what message he intended behind renaming Lake Ontario he replied “no message,” yet proceeded into complaints about alleged unfair practices by Canadians regarding trade.
“Canada has been ripping us off for a long time on trade,” he asserted adding further “They don’t pay anything yet want state-like treatment when they aren’t one.” Both Carney along with New York Governor Kathy Hochul indicated they won’t recognize Trump’s new title change for Lake Ontario; however federal agencies will still need comply under executive orders issued by him.
