The province’s police oversight agency is looking into a serious overnight crash on Highway 400 northbound near Rutherford Road in Vaughan that resulted in the arrest of a driver who ran away from the scene.
The incident, which took place just north of Langstaff Road in Vaughan around midnight, involved three vehicles.
According to OPP, a suspected impaired driver in a cargo van rear-ended a minivan, which then hit another vehicle driven by an off-duty York Regional Police officer.
The driver of the cargo van left his vehicle after the collision and tried to escape. He was caught soon after in a nearby parking lot outside a restaurant. The man was arrested for impaired driving and taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Two other individuals were also taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
The northbound lanes of Highway 400 were closed at Bass Pro Mills Drive for several hours but reopened just before 9:30 a. m. on Thursday.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has activated its mandate and will take charge of this case.
The SIU is an independent civilian organization that investigates cases where people died or suffered serious injuries. They also look into incidents involving alleged sexual assault or when firearms have been discharged at individuals.
