A transition is happening at the top of the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board (WECDSB).

John Ulicny will step in as director of education this summer when Emelda Byrne retires on Aug. 1.

Ulicny has dedicated his career to education, having worked for 34 years in the local Catholic system.

“Our school board has been on an upward trajectory for many years now,” said Ulicny.

“Our enrolment continues to grow, we are on solid financial footing, and we continue to introduce exciting new programs for our students.”

The board supports around 24,500 students across 32 elementary schools, three middle schools, eight secondary schools and an adult education centre.

This role acts as the system’s CEO and chief education officer, reporting directly to the board of trustees.

He’ll be its ninth director – currently serving as executive superintendent of human resources for the board.

Ulicny started his teaching journey in 1992 at St. Anne Catholic High School.

He also worked at St. Thomas Villanova Catholic Secondary School, where he was vice-principal. After that, he served in the same capacity at F. J. Brennan Catholic High School before becoming principal at Cardinal Carter Catholic Secondary School – then moving on to superintendent of education and later superintendent of human resources.

“As a senior member of our Catholic school board’s administrative team, John has demonstrated that he’s a highly accomplished and effective leader,” said WECDSB chair Lisa Soulliere.

Emelda Byrne mentioned that Ulicny understands the cultural diversity within the community and is devoted to fostering inclusive and culturally responsive environments that enhance student well-being.

“He has a strong understanding of Ontario education legislation, policy and governance and extensive knowledge in labour relations, contract negotiations and organizational development,” she said.
