TORONTO – Toronto police have announced that three of their officers who were charged in Spain are now back in Canada and have been placed on paid suspension.

The Mossos d’Esquadra police in Barcelona confirmed on Tuesday that the three men were arrested for sexual assault and causing injuries following an incident in a taxi last week.

Various Spanish news outlets reported that the Canadian officers, who were on vacation, had been detained for allegedly sexually assaulting and assaulting a sex worker in Barcelona.

Toronto police spokesperson Stephanie Sayer mentioned on Monday that the three officers were charged while vacationing but did not provide details about the specific charges or confirm reports from Spanish media.

Sayer has since stated that all three officers are back in Canada and have been suspended with pay under the province’s policing act.

Sayer indicated that the department is “exploring” the policing act and looking into whether they can seek suspension without pay as they await further information from Spanish authorities.

Coun. Shelley Carroll, chair of the Toronto Police Service Board, described the reports coming from Spain as “serious and troubling,” stressing that public trust in law enforcement must be “continually reinforced.”

This report by The Canadian Press was first May 20, 2026.
