First phase will see warming centres open in Barrie, Orillia, Midland, Wasaga Beach, Bradford

NEWS RELEASE
COUNTY OF SIMCOE

As winter gets closer, the County of Simcoe is increasing its warming centre services throughout the area. This move aims to make sure that no one without shelter has to stay outside in the cold this winter.

The first phase of the county’s winter response plan started on Nov. 1 with several warming centres opening their doors. The locations below are set to open based on local approvals, fire safety regulations, building codes, and capacity limits. For more information, visit simcoe. ca/Homelessness System.

While the ultimate aim is full daily activation – which includes 24/7 bedded services (except for temperature-activated beds in Bradford) – this first phase will kick off at these spots:

Barrie

The Busby Centre – 90 Mulcaster St. (opening date coming soon); capacity: 25; open daily 24/7; pet-friendly Salvation Army – 16 Bayfield St. (open); capacity: 15; open daily 7:30 p. m. to 7:30 a. m. County of Simcoe Modular Facility – 113 Tiffin St. (opening date coming soon); capacity: 40; open daily 24/7 Trinity Anglican Church – 24 Collier St. (opening date coming soon); capacity: 25; open daily 9:30 PM-7:30 AM Hope Centre – 34 Mary St. (opening date coming soon); capacity: 15; open daily 7:30 p. m. to 7:30 a. m.

Orillia

Location information coming soon

Midland

The Guesthouse – 522 Elizabeth St. (open); capacity: eight; open daily 7:30 p. m. to 7:30 a. m.

Wasaga Beach

Faith Community Church – 1355 River Rd. W. (open); capacity:10; open daily from 7:30 p. m. to 7:30 a. m.; pet-friendly

Bradford

WOW Living -177 Church St.(open); capacity :10 ; temperature -activated (-10 degrees Celsius threshold) ; open  from  7 :30 p. m. to  7 :30 a. m.

The available services can differ by location and might include laundry facilities, showers, meals, and other forms of support. For detailed service offerings , please visit simcoe. ca/Winter Warming.

More locations may be introduced as we get approval from local authorities.

This effort is just one way the County of Simcoe collaborates with partners to provide safe spaces for those without homes who want shelter from the winter weather. To learn more about the county’s homelessness prevention strategy , check out simcoe. ca/Homelessness System.
