A 14-year-old boy has been charged in connection with a hate crimes investigation after a memorial in Brampton dedicated to the victims of the Tamil genocide in Sri Lanka was damaged, according to police.
In a news release on Thursday, Peel Regional Police reported that the Tamil Genocide Memorial located at Chinguacousy Park had been spray-painted with offensive messages. Authorities said they were informed about the vandalism on March 20.
The boy, who resides in Brampton, was taken into custody and faces two counts of mischief over $5,000 as of March 31. He is set to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice later.
Due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the boy’s identity cannot be disclosed.
“Peel Regional Police will not tolerate vandalism – especially hate-motivated crimes of spaces that are meaningful to our communities,” Peel Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah stated in the release.
“People across the region have the right to feel safe in public spaces.”
Police mentioned that they have recently established their hate crime unit, which aims to improve responses to hate-motivated offenses and incidents sensitive to cultural issues.
The monument was officially unveiled on May 10, 2025.
