A family friend and organizer of the campaign says a 30-year-old man from Barrie was shot while trying to protect his best friend on Dunlop Street East.

A Go Fund Me campaign has been established for the individual injured in Sunday morning’s shooting in downtown Barrie, which has left a 30-year-old local man recovering at a hospital in Toronto.

City police reported that the victim was transported to a trauma center in Toronto with serious but stable injuries after being shot shortly before 3 a. m. on April 5.

According to police, they received reports of an altercation around 2:45 a. m. on Dunlop Street East, between Owen and Mulcaster streets, outside a downtown nightclub.

The police have released images of a male suspect connected to the shooting and are asking for help from the public to identify him based on those images.

As of Monday at 12:30 p. m., Jennett Mays, communications coordinator with Barrie police, mentioned that the investigation is still ongoing and there are no new updates available for the public. The victim remains in stable condition.

A local resident who witnessed the shooting shared his distress about what he saw when he spoke with Barrie Today yesterday.

“I panicked, but I was more worried about everybody else,” said John, who asked not to have his last name .

The 50-year-old mentioned there were about 100 people gathered outside one of the bars on Dunlop Street East after closing time.

“I was looking down the barrel of the gun pretty much, and then I started trying to get people out of the way in case he started shooting,” he explained. “Then (the suspect’s) friends grabbed (him) and they ran east on Dunlop Street.”

John described how a brief fight broke out among “a few girls … and then shortly after I heard a loud pop that sounded like it was muffled – almost like fireworks.”

In an earlier news release on Sunday morning, police indicated that this incident appears isolated and stated that “police do not believe there is a risk to public safety at this time.”

Meanwhile, efforts are underway through Go Fund Me to support Jordan financially during his recovery following this tragic event.

The campaign’s organizer Kristy wrote on their website that she “grew up with Jordan and (is) very close with his family.”

Barrie Today attempted to reach out to Kristy for additional comments but had not received any responses prior to this article’s publication.

“Jordan suffered an unimaginable trauma yesterday while defending his best friend. Jordan was shot and suffered life-altering injuries and consequences,” she detailed on the fundraising page.

Kristy added that Jordan will face “a very long and complicated recovery ahead of him.” She noted that he lacks benefits or insurance to assist him financially during this tough period. “We would be grateful for any donations that could help reduce his stress financially so he can focus on his recovery,” she wrote.

The police have requested anyone with information regarding this case contact investigators from their major crime unit at 705-725-7025, ext. 2160.
