GM Canada Announces Major Investment in Engine Production

2026-04-29

This investment backs GM’s long-term dedication to manufacturing in Canada and the future of its popular trucks and SUVs.

St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada – April 29, 2026 – General Motors Canada is putting C$691 million into its St. Catharines Propulsion Plant to support the production of the sixth generation of General Motors’ V-8 engine, which will power GM’s sought-after full-size trucks and SUVs.

Equipment for this project has already started arriving at the site, and the plant will keep producing the fifth generation V-8 engine while getting ready for the next generation to begin production.

This funding makes St. Catharines the third GM propulsion facility to manufacture this new line of engines alongside Tonawanda Propulsion Plant in Buffalo, New York, and Flint Engine Operations in Flint, Michigan. An integrated manufacturing setup will help GM continue meeting customer demand for high-volume full-size pickups across North America.

“Today’s announcement confirms St. Catharines will play a key role in one of our core vehicle programs for years to come, and it reflects General Motors’ confidence in the St. Catharines team and their proud 74-year legacy of powering our most popular vehicles,” said Jack Uppal, president and managing director, GM Canada.

The new V-8 engine is expected to offer better performance than current models thanks to innovations in combustion and thermal management that drive these advancements. The investment will go toward new machinery, equipment, tooling, and significant renovations at the plant.

The latest investment in St. Catharines builds on GM Canada’s wider commitments to manufacturing here, including a C$343 million investment in Oshawa Assembly aimed at producing the next generation of gas-powered full-size pickup trucks. Overall, GM has invested around C$3.3 billion into its Canadian operations since 2020, highlighting its long-term commitment to Canada.

Facts on GM Canada’s Manufacturing Footprint

Oshawa Assembly:

Oshawa Assembly is unique as GM’s only North American facility that manufactures both light-duty and heavy-duty Chevrolet Silverado pickups on the same assembly line; part of Oshawa also focuses on aftermarket parts such as stamping and related sub-assembly activities for GM. Preparations are underway at Oshawa Assembly for building the next generation of gas-powered full-size pickups with support from a $343 million investment that strengthens Oshawa’s role within GM’s essential full-size truck program.  Since 2020, Oshawa has received $1.5 billion in investments.

 St. Catharines:

St. Catharines Propulsion continues to be important now and into the future-it will produce GM’s next-generation V8 engines that power our highly sought-after full-size trucks and SUVs. Since 2020, St. Catharines has received C$828 million in investments.

CAMI Assembly:

GM is still looking at this site for potential future opportunities.
