As the registration period for the 2026 municipal election comes to an end, five candidates, including the current mayor and a city councillor, have officially entered the race for Mississauga’s mayoral position.

Mayor Carolyn Parrish, who took office following Bonnie Crombie’s departure to lead the Ontario Liberals after winning a byelection in June 2024, and councillor Alvin Tedjo, who was runner-up to Parrish in that previous race almost two years ago, both registered their candidacies on Friday.

Tedjo has stepped down from his Ward 2 council seat to pursue the mayoral role. He first won his council seat in 2022.

While they may not be household names, two other candidates will likely be familiar to those who have kept up with recent municipal elections in Mississauga.

George Tavares and David Shaw were part of the group of 20 candidates during the 2024 mayoral byelection and both also campaigned for mayor in the 2022 municipal election.

Shaw finished fifth in the byelection with 2,843 votes while Tavares came in eighth with 962 votes.

The results of that June byelection showed Parrish leading with 43,494 votes and Tedjo following with 35,005 votes. They were followed by two other city councillors – Dipika Damerla from Ward 7 (27,119 votes) and Stephen Dasko from Ward 1 (22,408 votes).

In the previous election for Mississauga’s mayoral seat in 2022, Shaw received 7,202 votes (6.83 percent) while Tavares had 5,613 votes (5.32 percent), placing second and third respectively behind Crombie (82,736 votes or 78.47 percent).

Rahul Mehta registered late Friday afternoon as this year’s fifth candidate for mayor after previously running for the Ward 8 council seat in 2022.

The municipal election is set for October 26. Candidate nominations opened Friday morning at 8:30 a. m. and will continue until August 21 at 2 p. m.

If you want more details about who’s running or how to become a candidate as well as general election information, check out the city’s election page online.

The following candidates have also registered to run for Mississauga city council as of late Friday afternoon (May 1):

Stephen Dasko – Ward 1 (incumbent) Chris Fonseca – Ward 3 (incumbent) Kim Pines – Ward 3 Stjepan Vukovic – Ward 3 Ismail Bawa – Ward 5 Mandeep Singh Dhaliwal – Ward 5 Joe Horneck – Ward 6 (incumbent) Maisa Salhia – Ward 7 Leslie Zurek-Silvestri – Ward 7 Matt Mahoney – Ward 8 (incumbent) Martin Reid – Ward 9 (incumbent)

After Crombie resigned early in early 2024 , four city councillors at that time-Parrish (Ward 5), Tedjo , Damerla , and Dasko-joined a field of 20 candidates vying to replace her.

At least two are set to compete again in the 2026 mayorial race , while Damerla remains uncertain as she had yet to register for her competition in Ward 7 by late Friday.

Dasko is currently focused on retaining his position representing Ward 1.

Parrish has mentioned multiple times on INsauga. com that she’s aiming for another term as she still feels there’s “a lot to accomplish,” she said earlier.
