Vancouver, Canada – It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of Ivor Winton on March 28, 2026. Ivor died at Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis while visiting from Vancouver, BC, alongside his partner and spouse of 50 years, Juan Atanacio Felipe-Torres. Since being diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia in July 2020, Ivor had faced declining health.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Ivor was a graduate of Glasgow University, the University of British Columbia, and the University of Minnesota. In 2019, he retired from the Geography Department at Simon Fraser University in Canada.

Colleagues and students held Ivor in high regard because of his booming voice and vast knowledge on many subjects.

Ivor and Juan enjoyed extensive travels throughout Europe. They often visited Glasgow to see aging parents. Having written his master’s thesis on wine, they explored France and Italy in search of the perfect wine. They eventually found a second home in La Begude de Mazenc, France, where they frequently visited friends Andrew and Ulrike, who were former residents of Canada.

Ivor is survived by three cousins in Scotland and England as well as many relatives in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. After a private cremation, he will be interred at Fort Snelling National Cemetery to honor his spouse’s service as a U. S. military veteran.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis or the University of Minnesota Libraries.

A celebration of life will take place later for family and friends in both Minneapolis and Vancouver, Canada.
