Major Security Funding for FIFA World Cup in Canada
3:22 pm Thursday, April 30, 2026 The federal government has committed up to $145 million to boost security measures for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. On Wednesday (April 29), Federal Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree announced the funding specifically for Vancouver and Toronto. This money is intended to meet the operational needs outlined by the host provinces and cities ahead of the month-long event. Anandasangaree mentioned that this funding will help lessen financial pressures on provinces and municipalities while ensuring public safety agencies have what they need to keep everything safe and organized during the tournament. Vancouver – along with B. C. – is set to welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors for the World Cup. B. C. Public Safety Minister Nina Krieger said in a statement on Wednesday that they are awaiting more details regarding the funding contribution. Surrey-Panorama MLA Bryan Tepper, who serves as the Opposition’s community safety critic, questioned Krieger about how many officers will be sent to Vancouver from other parts of the province. “How many officers in total are being redeployed from B. C. detachments to the Lower Mainland for FIFA, and which communities are losing them?” Krieger responded that while the Vancouver Police Department is responsible for policing during this event, “but they are not alone in the task of keeping games safe.” She noted that support from the federal RCMP’s commissioner has also been assured to make sure Vancouver’s games run smoothly and safely. “There will be decisions made at both provincial and national levels regarding officer deployment before or during the games.” Government House Leader Mike Farnworth stated that they have collaborated closely with Vancouver City officials to ensure BC Place is prepared when the games commence. “We have already heard that Vancouver is far and away the best prepared city in the entire North American FIFA tournament.” Anandasangaree pointed out that this World Cup, starting June 11 and continuing until July 19, will be “one of the largest and most complex sporting events ever hosted in Canada.” Canada will host 13 out of 104 matches, with seven taking place in Vancouver and six in Toronto. The 2026 World Cup marks a historic joint hosting by Canada, the U. S., and Mexico – a first for FIFA.Source link
