York Regional Police have shared a video showing four individuals breaking into a home in Richmond Hill, Ont. early Monday morning.
In a news release on Tuesday, police mentioned that they are looking for five suspects total, including a driver who helped them escape.
The break-in took place near Bayview Avenue and Ambler Lane. Officers arrived after receiving a call about the incident at around 3:30 a. m. on Monday.
Const. James Dickson, a spokesperson for York Regional Police, stated in an interview on Tuesday that the event seems to have been targeted.
“Now this is quite a concerning home invasion because this is happening overnight at three in the morning. This is when everyone’s expected to be in bed at home,” Dickson said.
The footage shows four people forcing their way into the house.
Three approach the steps while one kicks the door and another appears to brace it. Then, the person holding the door kicks it twice until it breaks open, allowing all four to enter.
According to police, the intruders confronted the homeowner and demanded cash. At least one was armed with a gun.
“Very clearly, you can see at least one male has a hammer in his hand and a second male is armed with a firearm,” Dickson said.
“They’re pulling people out of bed in the middle of the night and made a demand for cash. Very fortunately, nobody was injured in this incident.”
The group escaped in a dark-colored sedan driven by another person not yet identified by police.
A small amount of belongings was taken during this incident, as noted by Dickson.
Dickson emphasized that these types of home invasions where suspects interact directly with homeowners are alarming. He advised everyone to prioritize their personal safety if they ever find themselves in such situations.
“Property can be replaced, but lives cannot, especially when we’re dealing with people that are willing to come in here and confront someone in the middle of the night with a firearm,” he said. “We don’t know who this person is; we don’t know what they’re capable of, and the last thing we want to do is see someone hurt.”
If anyone has information regarding this case, they are encouraged to contact law enforcement.
